Delivering large‑scale global cardiovascular research through our CRDC

The study focuses on long‑term cardiovascular outcomes in a complex, multimorbid population. This type of research places significant demands on site capability, including accurate participant identification, delivery across care settings, intensive safety monitoring and sustained participant engagement over several years.

The challenge

Cardiovascular outcomes studies are among the most complex trials to deliver. They typically involve strict eligibility criteria, recruitment from both hospital and primary care populations, long follow‑up periods, and intensive monitoring of patients. Maintaining participant engagement over time while ensuring consistent, high‑quality delivery across multiple settings is essential to study success.

Our solution

NIHR Wessex CRDC supported delivery through two research sites in Weymouth and Bournemouth, providing access to a broad and diverse patient population across Dorset. The study was delivered across an acute hospital site and a community health centre, supported by experienced research teams with a strong track record in cardiovascular and metabolic research. This approach enabled standardised delivery across two distinct populations and settings, reducing operational complexity while maintaining consistency, quality and compliance.

Clinical leadership and primary care reach

The study is led locally by a GP Principal Investigator, demonstrating NIHR Wessex CRDC’s ability to support primary‑care‑led research alongside hospital and community‑based delivery models. This approach is particularly valuable for prevention‑focused cardiovascular research, where eligible populations are frequently identified and managed outside acute hospital settings.

By embedding research delivery across primary and secondary care, NIHR Wessex CRDC enables broader reach, improved recruitment potential and more representative participation in large‑scale cardiovascular studies.

Value of the CRDC model

Through studies such as this, NIHR Wessex CRDC demonstrates how the UK can deliver complex, global cardiovascular research at scale. Key strengths include access to large and diverse patient populations, experienced multidisciplinary research teams, regional coordination that reduces site burden, and alignment with a national CRDC network that supports consistency and quality across regions.

This model positions NIHR Wessex CRDC as a strong partner for the delivery of high‑impact, international cardiovascular research, supporting the UK’s competitiveness as a destination for complex clinical studies.
