Based in Queen Alexandra Hospital (QA) in Portsmouth - a large acute hospital known for known for high-volume clinical trials and award-winning research. The site also hosts regional services for cancer and Wessex Kidney Centre.
Portsmouth, with a 2021 population of 208,100, is renowned as the UK's only island city and the second most densely populated local authority after London.
The population here faces significant health inequalities, with lower life expectancies than the national average, particularly in deprived areas. While 71.1% of adults are physically active (above the national average), high rates of smoking, alcohol-related hospital admissions, and long-term conditions like COPD and diabetes persist. Mental health challenges are also prevalent.
This site was previously based in a community centre to great effect and much headway has been made to link our work with community groups, working alongside the Trust’s health inequalities team and our own Patient Research Ambassadors.
